This is the Day is NOT just another Ezio record.
Some good friends of mine could never quite understand my passion for the songs and lyrics of Ezio Lunedei till theyʻd actually seen Booga and Ezio perform live, preferably as a duo.
Here the songs finally fulfill their wild promise. The delivery is always poignant, at times deadpan funny, melancholic, political, sarcastic and quite mean, indeed. Not so comfy and nice as some of the records would want you to believe. Itʻs always been a wee bit the „Let It Be/Phil Spector“ dilemma with Ezio. Great songs and sentiments,... but who let the string section and choir in?
So, here we finally have the ultimate „Ezio in a nutshell“ record. Sans the floss and ear candy. Recorded in a very, very rustic country house studio in northern Germany in two short explosive sessions, This is the Day captures Ezioʻs songs and performance in their most potent form. And lo and behold how this rough diamond will sparkle!
Who today could come up with such bad-ass sounding tracks like Bad Bad Place with its „while half the world is writhing in pleasure, the other half is writhing in pain“ acerbic lyric set. Reminiscent of Tony Joe White, the original swamp fox, in all his gin-soaked, leather-clad glory.
Bruce Springsteen (a sure contender for this yearʼs coolest song title!) is a pure treat of Asbury Park, New Jersey meets Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire proportions. „Iʼll never be the boss. Just lower management I guess. Iʼve never had a Thunderbird. A beat-up Volvo is less absurd“.
And what about Bicycle? „I love being drunk on my bicycle. It makes me feel just like I can fly“. Only Ezio Lunedei could write a song like this one. An instant classic in my mind. Funny, too.
The arrangements on This is the Day are kept sparse so can you can really FEEL every nuance of the vocal delivery. And letʻs not forget the stunning guitar interplay of Booga and Ezio, assisted in an understated, drop dead cool kind of way by Lars Plogschties (drums) and Marcus Praed (bass).
„This time, oh yes, this time something else happened. Something you always need but weʼve never had.
This time, for the first time, ………We got lucky!!“, Ezio says of the sessions for This is the Day.
They got lucky. We got lucky, too.
This is the Day definitly means a lot less explaining of the virtues of Ezio to my friends.
Just get the album. Listen. You get it now, right?

This is the Day ist nicht einfach nur ein weiteres Ezio-Album! Einige meiner guten Freunde konnten meine Leidenschaft für die Songs und Texte von Ezio Lunedei bisher nicht verstehen, es sei denn, sie hatten Booga und Ezio live, vorzugsweise als Duo gesehen. Denn so vorgetragen, lösen die Songs ihr Versprechen ein. Die Darbietung ist immer ergreifend, zeitweilig gespickt mit trockenem Humor, melancholisch, politisch, sarkastisch und auch recht garstig. Nicht so gemütlich und nett wie der Sound einiger Platten es suggeriert. Mit Ezio-Alben war es schon immer wie beim "Let it be/Phil Spector"-Dilemma: Großartige Songs und Statements... aber wer hat die Streicher und den Chor reingelassen?
Also, hier haben wir jetzt endlich das ultimative Album "Ezio-auf-den-Punkt- gebracht". Ohne Watte und ohne Zuckerguss. Aufgenommen in zwei kurzen, explosiven Sessions, in einem sehr, sehr rustikalen Landhaus-Studio in Norddeutschland, schafft es This is the Day Ezios Songs und Performance in ihrer mächtigsten Gestalt festzuhalten. Und siehe da - ein ungeschliffener Diamant beginnt zu glänzen!
Wer schafft es schon heutzutage, so wahnsinnig toll klingende Songs wie Bad Bad Place zu schreiben, inklusive bitterster "while half the world is writhing in pleasure, the other half is writhing in pain (während sich die halbe Welt vor lachen krümmt, windet sich die andere vor Schmerzen)"-Textzeilen. Erinnerungen an Tony Joe White, den original swamp fox werden wach, in seinem Gin getränkten, Leder bekleideten Glanz.

Und was ist mit Bicycle? "I love being drunk on my bicycle. It makes me feel just like I can fly" (Ich liebe es, betrunken auf meinem Fahrrad zu sein. Es fühlt sich an als könnte ich fliegen.) Nur Ezio Lunedei kann solch einen Song schreiben. Für mich schon jetzt ein Klassiker. Und lustig noch dazu.
This is the Day ist spärlich arrangiert, so dass man jede Nuance der Stimme fühlen kann. Und nicht zu vergessen das beeindruckende Gitarren-Zusammenspiel zwischen Booga und Ezio, dezent untermalt in einer verdammt coolen Art von Lars Plogschties (Drums) und Marcus Praed (Bass).
"Dieses Mal, oh ja, dieses Mal ist etwas anderes passiert. Etwas, was man immer braucht, aber was wir nie hatten. Dieses mal, zum ersten Mal, ...hatten wir Glück!", sagt Ezio über die Aufnahmen zu This is the Day.
Sie hatten Glück. Wir haben auch Glück gehabt.
Dank This is the Day muss ich meinen Freunden mein Faible für Ezio nicht mehr erklären. Jetzt kann ich ihnen sagen: Holt Euch einfach das Album und dann versteht ihr es sofort!
