THE START OF SOMETHING NEW introduces THE LATE CALL’s latest full length release, YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME, with a muffled but driving beat which sets the tone for the rest of the album. Throughout the record there is an energy which remains as the driving force, all the way through to its gratifying end.

YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME comes as a marked contrast to the acclaimed debut LEAVING NOTES on which Johannes Mayer was given the opportunity to cut his teeth with an album of beautiful songs exercised in the art of restraint. On his sophomore record the Stockholm-based force behind THE LATE CALL has put together an album full of punctuation marks giving a completely new perspective to the introverted nature of LEAVING NOTES. After the heavily guitar and vocals based debut, you will find a whole bunch of different instruments on YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME with a stronger emphasis on percussion and strings with old pianos and brass (FRIBOURG!) thrown in for good measure. The result is a collection of songs that have been arranged with great love and attention to detail. However you will not find any form of musical overload or effect-fireworks in any of the songs. YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME, in evolutionary terms, could be described as the missing link between Kings Of Convenience and Bon Iver.

“I already knew before I even recorded the very first note that this will be an important, perhaps personally my most important album, due to all the changes around me. It’s a lot about believing in something, even when you’re sitting totally exhausted in the studio, in the middle of the recordings but still not letting the light at the end of the tunnel get out of your sight. The recording-process even became a kind of therapy, to prove to yourself that you can reach your own goals.” Johannes Mayer

The situation in the studio reflects life’s circumstances which THE LATE CALL describe on YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME: the attempt to build your life, the struggles, the set-backs and the belief in a rewarding and positive end. To flee would clearly not be an option, it’s about one’s own confidence and belief to actually make it happen. “She won’t open up the door for you / cause you already have a home”

One-and-a-half years after his debut release YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME finally arrives, which with its impressive clarity and sharp observation, combines a beautiful interaction of lyrical content and melody with a simplicity that demonstrates how much THE LATE CALL has developed as a songwriter and musician.

The album was recorded and co-produced by Tapete stable-mate John Roger Olsson (THE GRAND OPENING) in his Stockholm-studio (which harbours many of the instruments used on YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME). Furthermore the album features collaborations with, among others, Ylva Ceder (who Johannes Mayer toured with in December 2009), bass player Patric Thorman and Maria Eriksson (THE CONCRETES).

Vinyl enthusiasts will have extra reason to be excited; besides a special edition cover the LP-version comes with the wonderful and exclusive track VALLEY, which is not available on CD.

Mit THE START OF SOMETHING NEW beginnt das zweite Album von THE LATE CALL, ein pochender, dumpfer Beat im Hintergrund scheint beständig sagen zu wollen: "Weiter, weiter! Immer weiter!" Irgendwann verschwindet der Beat, aber die unter der Oberfläche liegende Unruhe bleibt fast über das gesamte Album….

Übte sich das viel gelobte Debüt LEAVING NOTES, mit dem der Stockholmer Johannes Mayer a.k.a. The Late Call sein songwriterisches Können erstmals unter Beweis stellen konnte, noch in der Kunst der Zurückhaltung, so ist YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME ein Werk voller Ausrufezeichen! Ein wenig so, als ob THE LATE CALL die introvertierte Sicht des ersten Albums mit einem interessierten Blick aus dem Fenster ergänzt hätte. Während auf LEAVING NOTES noch Stimme und Gitarre dominierten, finden sich auf YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME mehr Percussion, noch mehr Streicher, alte Pianos und Bläser (FRIBOURG!). So ergeben sich mit Liebe zum Detail ausarrangierte Songs. Überladung oder billige Effekthascherei sucht man vergebens. YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME ist der Missing Link zwischen den Kings of Convenience und Bon Iver.

"Ich wusste schon bevor ich den ersten Ton eingespielt hatte, dass dies ein wichtiges, vielleicht mein persönlich wichtigstes Album werden wird, bei all den Veränderungen um mich herum. Es geht viel ums daran glauben, selbst dann, wenn man völlig erschöpft im Studio sitzt, mitten im Aufnahmeprozess, und trotzdem das Licht am Ende des Tunnels nicht aus den Augen lässt. Das Einspielen wurde fast schon zu einer Art Therapie, um sich selbst zu beweisen, dass man seine eigenen Ziele erreichen kann."

Die Situation lässt sich auf die Lebensumstände übertragen, die THE LATE CALL auf YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME beschreibt: der Versuch, sich sein eigenes Leben aufzubauen, vom Kämpfen, den Rückschlägen und dem Glauben an ein gutes Ende. Die Flucht ist keine Alternative, es geht um die eigene Zuversicht, es zu schaffen. "She won't open up the door for you / cause you already have a home."

Eineinhalb Jahre nach Veröffentlichung seines Debüts folgt mit YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME ein Album, dem in seiner Größe, seiner Deutlichkeit und Beobachtungsschärfe, dem grandiosen Zusammenspiel von textlichem Inhalt und Melodie anzuhören ist, dass THE LATE CALL einen großen Schritt nach vorne gemacht hat.

Aufgenommen und co-produziert wurde das Album von Label-Kollege John Roger Olsson (THE GRAND OPENING) in seinem Stockholmer Studio (dessen reicher Instrumentenfundus sich auf YOU ALREADY HAVE A HOME bemerkbar macht). Zudem wirken u.a. Ylva Ceder (mit der Johannes Mayer im Dezember 2009 auf Tour war), Patric Thorman und Maria Eriksson (THE CONCRETES) am Album mit.

Vinylliebhaber werden sich freuen: neben einem speziellen Cover kommt die LP-Version zudem mit dem wundervollen VALLEY, das nicht auf der CD-Version erhältlich ist.
